Want to see something terrifyingly awesome?  How about this video of a city-sized chunk of glacier calving off into the water, which took place in 2008 in Western Greenland.  From the stats presented on the YouTube page, the event lasted 75 minutes and resulted in a full mile of glacier retreat across a calving face three miles wide.

This awe-inspiring spectacle is also troubling: this glacier has retreated more in the last ten years than it has in the previous 100, indicating a dramatic melting of the ice resulting from global climate change.

(Learned about this video via the Heli-Ski blog, through my friend and ocean blogger Kevin Zelnio.)
